Throw rugs come in all shapes, styles and sizes. However, once
a rug gets too large, it probably is not a throw rug any more.
Traditionally, a throw rug is a small, light weight rug, usually
made from cotton. They’re called throw rugs because they
can be tossed around, washed easily and be used almost anywhere
in the house.
These days, folks refer to any number of rugs as throw rugs.
Even a full size area rug may be called a throw. By some definitions,
a throw rug is any rug that is not somehow affixed to the floor.
This definition would defeat the purpose of even using the term
“throw rug”.
For the most part, any rug, padding or other type of mat that
is secured to the ground will be called carpet. Area rugs stay
where they are except for occasional removal for cleaning. Mat
rugs, such as would be found in an entry way or kitchen, are designed
and chosen for a specific spot and purpose. Bath rugs are meant
for use in only one room. So, none of these should be considered
throw rugs.
